Let’s transform our immigration system

We have come too far to be turned back now

The We Are Home campaign is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational coalition calling on the Biden administration and Congress to transform America’s inhumane immigration system. We Are Home is pushing for both executive and legislative changes to undo the damage of the last four years and build a new immigration system that is fair, humane, functional, and centered on racial justice. And enact legislation that creates a roadmap to citizenship for immigrants who call this country home.

Progress on immigration:

Within the first 100 days of the Biden administration, Congress introduced 4 immigration bills: US Citizenship Act of 2021, Citizenship for Essential Workers Act, American Dream and Promise Act of 2021, and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2021. Both the American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6) and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act (H.R. 1603) passed with bipartisan support through the House of Representatives  — two pieces of legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for more than 4 million people. Currently, these two bills are stuck in the Senate as they require 60 Senators to approve.

Given that a bipartisan approach has failed time and time again, We Are Home Action called for immigration to be included in the budget reconciliation process. Reconciliation is a special legislative process that can expedite passage of certain budgetary legislation as it only needs a simple majority in the Senate, 50 Senators to approve, to pass instead of the 60 votes needed for legislation. And so far immigration is very close to passing in the reconciliation package known as the Build Back Better recovery package – take a look at how far immigration has come:

  • July 14, 2021 – The Senate Budget Committee signed off the Build Back Better agreement with immigration included.
  • August 11, 2021 – Budget resolution with reconciliation instructions to include funds for immigration passed out of the Senate.
  • August 23, 2021 – Budget resolution is passed out of the House with immigration included.
  • November 19, 2021 – The House passed the Build Back Better Act with immigration included.
  • December 16, 2021 – The parliamentarian issued her advisory opinion on the immigration reform provision in the Build Back Better Act, a proposal that would provide immigration relief through work permits and protection from deportation for millions of immigrants across the country.

In 2022, the fight continues to get the bill through the finish line. We remain committed to fighting for our communities!

We will not stop until all immigrant families can live with the stability and dignity they deserve. We know that immigrant justice is racial justice and that the road to victory has been and will be paved by the fearlessness of millions of undocumented, LGBTQ, Black, indigenous, labor, and immigrant leaders.

The time to win a pathway to citizenship for immigrant communities is now. Poll after poll has shown that the American public on both sides of the aisle supports a path to citizenship.

This is our moment. Join our coalition to help fight for a pathway to citizenship for immigrants across the country.
